To study in UAE as an international student you apply to a licensed university, receive an admission letter, and get a one-year renewable student residence visa sponsored by the university or a resident parent. Tuition varies widely by university and programme, and one Dubai university estimates student living costs at about AED 6,860 a month (Birmingham Dubai site, Oct 2026).
This guide covers the types of universities, how to check a licence, admission without the EmSAT, visas, sourced cost figures, scholarships and how to pick a course. It also covers the reverse question many UAE residents ask: how to study in the UK, Canada, Australia or the US from the UAE.
- Main university types
- Government (e.g. UAE University, Khalifa University), private UAE, international branch campuses
- Who licenses
- MOHESR and the CAA federally; KHDA for Dubai free-zone campuses

Benefits of study in UAE
- Foreign degrees at home-campus standard: many UK, Australian, US and Indian universities run campuses in Dubai's free zones, often awarding the same degree as at home.
- English-medium teaching at most private and branch campuses.
- Residence rights while studying: a student visa gives residence and an Emirates ID, and outstanding students and graduates can apply for golden residence (GDRFA Dubai lists criteria such as a 95% school average or a 3.5 university GPA).
- Flexible intakes: Heriot-Watt Dubai admits in September and January, and Middlesex Dubai lists January, April and September intakes for its daytime MBA.
Rankings: if a university cites a ranking, check it on the publisher's site (QS, Times Higher Education). See best universities in UAE.

Admission requirements
The national EmSAT test was cancelled as a Grade 12 university requirement in November 2024, so each university sets its own rules. Expect:
- School certificate and grades for the last years of study (UAE University asks for 85% to 90% depending on college).
- English test: IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT (UAE University accepts IELTS 5.5, Khalifa University 6.0).
- Subject tests or the university's own placement tests for engineering, science and medicine.
- Attested certificates and equivalency documents for foreign school qualifications.
If you need a bridge year, see foundation and undergraduate courses. For the test change, see EMSAT exam.
Student visa and 5 year visa options
The student visa is valid for one year and renewed each year with proof of enrolment (u.ae). Universities file it for you and publish their own fees; Curtin University Dubai, for example, lists AED 7,140 for a new visa (including an AED 3,000 refundable deposit) and AED 3,730 for renewal in 2026 (Curtin visa policy, July 2026). Searches for a "5 years visa for student in UAE" refer to golden residence for outstanding students, which u.ae describes as 5 years for top school leavers and 10 years for top university students. Full details: UAE student visa.
Cost of studying and living in the UAE
We only use published figures. Tuition examples (2026-27 unless noted):

Living costs: the University of Birmingham Dubai estimates a student's monthly spend at AED 6,860, excluding visa: AED 4,600 for a single room on an academic-year contract, AED 1,000 groceries, AED 500 taxis, AED 600 recreation and AED 160 mobile (Birmingham Dubai site, Oct 2026). Shared rooms and university shuttle buses can reduce this, and the same page notes that many restaurants and services offer student discounts. Add health insurance and visa fees on top, and keep a reserve for deposits when you sign a rental contract.

How to study in UAE for free (or nearly)
Full scholarships exist but are competitive. Examples: Khalifa University's Tier I international undergraduate scholarship (full tuition and textbooks), UAE University's 100% Chancellor's Scholarships, and the American University of Sharjah's President's Scholarship (tuition, stipend, housing and insurance). Khalifa University PhD scholarships also include a stipend and accommodation. See UAE scholarships for criteria.
Best courses to study in UAE
"Best" depends on your goals, but the most common choices at Dubai campuses are business (BBA, accounting and finance), computing and AI, engineering, health sciences and psychology. Before choosing, check:
- Whether the profession needs a UAE licence (medicine, nursing, engineering, law, teaching).
- Whether professional bodies accredit the degree (for example ACCA exemptions for accounting).
- Whether you can work part-time or do internships under your visa terms.

Online study in UAE
Online degrees and certificates are popular with working residents. For short courses, recognition matters less. For a degree you plan to use for a government job, a professional licence or further study, check whether the UAE ministry will grant equivalency for the online mode before you enrol. See free and online courses.
Study in the UK, Canada, Australia or USA from UAE
Many UAE residents look at studying abroad instead. The process is set by the destination country:
- UK: apply through UCAS for undergraduate study, then a UK student visa via the UK government's official site.
- Canada: admission from a designated learning institution, then a study permit from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
- Australia: admission and a Confirmation of Enrolment, then a student visa from the Department of Home Affairs.
- USA: admission and an I-20 or DS-2019, then an F-1 or J-1 visa interview at the US embassy or consulate.
- Singapore: admission, then a Student's Pass through the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority.
Requirements and fees change often; use each government's official page.
