English Language Courses in Dubai: IELTS, Spoken English and Business English

English courses in Dubai are run by language institutes licensed by KHDA, the British Council and university language centres, with group classes for adults priced from about AED 102 an hour at the British Council and IELTS preparation from AED 2,950 (British Council UAE site, Oct 2026). Most providers place you by a level test, teach to the CEFR scale (A1 to C2) and offer morning, evening and weekend batches.

This guide compares the main course types (general and spoken English, business English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation, kids and teens), lists verified providers and explains the real costs, including the exam fee if you need a test score. If you want to teach English rather than learn it, CELTA is covered on the teaching courses in Dubai page.

IELTS courses in Dubai and test fees

IELTS preparation courses teach the four test papers and timing strategies. They do not include the test itself, which you book separately. IDP UAE lists these IELTS fees:

TestFee (AED)
IELTS Academic or General Training, computer-delivered1,590
IELTS Academic or General Training, writing on paper1,750
IELTS for UKVI (Academic or General Training)1,680
IELTS Life Skills810

Choose Academic for university entry, General Training for work or migration (for example Canada or Australia), and UKVI only if a UK visa application requires it. UAE universities accept IELTS for English entry requirements; check each university's minimum band on universities in Dubai and, for Emirati applicants, the EmSAT exam page.

TOEFL and Cambridge English preparation

TOEFL preparation suits students applying to universities that prefer it, mainly in the US. Cambridge English preparation (B2 First, C1 Advanced) suits school students and adults who want a Cambridge certificate rather than a test score. Ask the institute whether it is an authorised exam centre or only teaches the preparation course, and book the exam directly with the test owner or its centre.

English courses for kids and teens in Dubai

The British Council's Dubai centre runs courses for kids and teens and summer programmes, including a Summer School Plus option with 22.5 extra hours of practice. Alliance Française Dubai and Eton Institute also run young learner programmes. For school-age learners, check class size, whether teachers hold a recognised teaching qualification such as CELTA or DELTA, and whether the course runs after school or at weekends.

Group, private, online and intensive English formats

Format affects both price and progress. The main options in Dubai:

  • Classroom group courses: the British Council's British Council English Course is an interactive group course at its Dubai centre, at levels from Elementary to Upper-Intermediate.
  • Teacher-led online: the British Council offers a flexible online course where you choose timetable, teachers and topics, paid monthly, plus IELTS Coach for online IELTS preparation and EnglishScore Tutors for personal tutoring.
  • Conversation practice: Wall Street English sells a Speak+ add-on of 30-minute conversation sessions in groups of up to four, which suits learners who need spoken English practice above all.
  • Private and intensive: Berlitz runs intensive private classes at Jumeirah and JLT, and Eton Institute offers one-to-one lessons in person or online.
  • Self-study: app or web courses are the cheapest option but give little speaking practice.

For beginners, a small group class with a fixed timetable usually works better than self-study, because speaking practice is built in.

English courses in Dubai: price guide

Only some providers publish prices. The British Council publishes a starting hourly rate (AED 102) and an IELTS preparation starting price (AED 2,950) on its UAE site (British Council UAE site, Oct 2026). Most others quote after a level test. When comparing:

  • Convert every quote to a price per contact hour.
  • Check whether books, registration and the level test are included.
  • Add the exam fee (for example AED 1,590 for computer-delivered IELTS (IDP UAE site, Oct 2026)) if you need a test score.
  • Ask about group size; private lessons cost more per hour but can be shorter overall.

Free English courses in Dubai are limited. Community centres, libraries and employers sometimes run free conversation classes, and free online self-study exists, but this guide could not verify a regular free classroom course in Dubai. See free courses in Dubai for other options.

How to choose an English course in Dubai

  1. Set the goal: everyday fluency, a job, IELTS band, or university entry.
  2. Take a placement test and ask what level you will start at and how many hours to the next level.
  3. Check the licence: Dubai institutes should hold a KHDA permit; verify it on KHDA's register.
  4. Check teacher qualifications (CELTA, DELTA or equivalent) and maximum class size.
  5. Compare the full price per hour, including materials and any exam fee.
  6. Match the schedule: evening, weekend or online options for working adults.
