Best Universities in UAE: Rankings Explained

Top universities in UAE: QS World University Rankings 2027

QS published its 2027 world ranking in June 2026. Twelve UAE universities are ranked, and according to QS figures reported by Khaleej Times, nine of the twelve improved and eight reached their highest position so far. Six UAE universities are now in the global top 500, up from three in 2022.

QS 2026 positions are shown where our source (Arabian Business, June 2025) reported them. The top 5 universities in UAE are the same in both editions, in the same order: Khalifa, UAEU, AUS, University of Sharjah and Abu Dhabi University.

Branch campuses in Dubai are not ranked separately by QS. A campus such as the University of Birmingham Dubai shares its home university's rank, which reflects research and reputation built mostly in the home country.

Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027: UAE entries

THE published its 2027 ranking on 30 September 2026, covering 2,297 institutions in 118 countries and territories. Nine UAE universities are ranked, up from five in 2021, according to the UAE government release reported by Zawya.

The two tables broadly agree on the top tier (Khalifa and UAEU) but differ further down: AUS sits third in QS but in the 501 to 550 band in THE, while Ajman and Al Ain do comparatively better in THE. That is a reminder that each ranking measures different things.

What university rankings measure (and what they miss)

QS World University Rankings

QS uses five lenses. Research and discovery counts for 50% (academic reputation survey 30%, citations per faculty 20%). Employability and outcomes count for 20% (employer reputation 15%, employment outcomes 5%). Global engagement counts for 15% (international faculty, international students and international research network, 5% each). Learning experience, measured by faculty to student ratio, counts for 10%, and sustainability for 5%.

THE World University Rankings

THE uses five pillars: research quality (30%), teaching (29.5%), research environment (29%), international outlook (7.5%) and industry (4%), according to its 2025 methodology. Universities that do not teach undergraduates, or that publish fewer than 1,000 papers over five years, are not ranked.

What this means for you

  • Both rankings lean heavily on research and reputation. A teaching-focused university can be a good choice for a BBA and still not appear.
  • Neither ranks the individual programme you will study. Check programme accreditation with the CAA, and professional accreditation (for example engineering or business accreditation) where it matters.
  • International scores lift UAE universities: THE reported a UAE average of 92 for international outlook.

Top universities in Dubai

Most top-ranked UAE universities are in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Sharjah. For the top universities in Dubai, the ranked options fall into two groups.

  • Dubai-based universities ranked by QS 2027: Zayed University (588, with a Dubai campus), Canadian University Dubai (616), American University in Dubai (620) and University of Dubai (781 to 790).
  • Branch campuses of ranked universities: Dubai's Government Media Office (July 2025) cited QS 2026 ranks for the University of Manchester (35th), University of Birmingham (76th), Curtin (183rd) and Wollongong (184th), and said three more universities with Dubai campuses are in the QS top 300.

So the top 10 universities in Dubai by global rank are mostly branch campuses. Check what each campus actually teaches in Dubai: Manchester's Dubai centre, for instance, focuses on part-time postgraduate study. The full list is on universities in Dubai.

Best universities in UAE by subject and goal

Business and BBA

In QS subject rankings for business and management, the Dubai Media Office cited London Business School (7th), ESCP (54th) and Luiss (67th), all with Dubai campuses, and IIM Ahmedabad (27th), which opened in Dubai for 2025-26. These Dubai campuses focus mostly on postgraduate and executive study. For a BBA, the best universities in Dubai for BBA include AUD, Canadian University Dubai, the University of Dubai and branch campuses such as Middlesex, Curtin and Murdoch. See MBA in Dubai and undergraduate courses.

Engineering, science and PhD study

Khalifa University leads both rankings and is research-intensive, which matters most for science, engineering and PhD applicants. UAEU in Al Ain is the other federal research university. Check each university's PhD admission page for the 2026 cycle.

Medicine and dentistry

Gulf Medical University in Ajman entered THE 2027. University of Sharjah and Ajman University both offer dentistry degrees. Dubai's MBRU is a specialist medical university. See medical universities in UAE.

Law

Law is taught at UAEU, University of Sharjah, Ajman University and several Dubai institutions. If you want to practise in the UAE, check local licensing requirements before you choose.

Art and design

Istituto Marangoni, with a Dubai campus, is ranked 51 to 100 in QS for art and design according to the Dubai Media Office.

Online and distance learning

Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University in Dubai is the main federally licensed online university. MoHESR introduced new conditions in 2025 under which some online programmes may get conditional approval, so check recognition first.

Public and private universities in UAE

The UAE's three federal universities are UAE University, Zayed University and the Higher Colleges of Technology; Khalifa University is also government-funded. Government universities in UAE are primarily for Emirati students and are generally free for eligible nationals. International students can apply but pay fees: Zayed University charges non-national students AED 2,500 per credit hour (ZU fee page, Oct 2026), and UAEU publishes per-credit fees for international undergraduates of AED 2,661 from 2026-27 (UAEU fee page, Oct 2026). So there are no free universities in UAE for most expats, but scholarships help; see UAE scholarships.

Private universities in UAE include not-for-profit institutions such as AUS, emirate-backed universities such as the University of Sharjah and AURAK, and many fully private and branch campuses. There is no official "Class A" category; the meaningful labels are CAA licensing and programme accreditation.

How many universities are in the UAE?

The Commission for Academic Accreditation's institution list includes 166 entries across all seven emirates, but many are marked as revoked or inactive. Dubai alone has 41 international providers (Dubai Media Office, July 2025) plus federal and local universities. Universities in Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah and Fujairah also appear on the list: for example Ajman University, Gulf Medical University and City University Ajman, and in Ras Al Khaimah the American University of Ras Al Khaimah, RAK Medical and Health Sciences University and European University RAK campus.

How to choose and apply to a university in the UAE

  1. Shortlist by subject and budget, then check each institution and programme on the CAA list.
  2. Use rankings as one input: compare QS and THE, and look at subject rankings for your field.
  3. Check entry requirements: federal universities use EMSAT for many applicants (see EMSAT exam); private universities usually accept school grades plus IELTS or TOEFL.
  4. Get your school certificate attested or made equivalent; universities such as Heriot-Watt Dubai require equivalency before or during the first semester.
  5. Apply directly on the university website and confirm visa sponsorship.
